There are 3 main ferry services for getting to Isla Mujeres. They operate from Gran Puerto, Puerto Jaurez and Punta Sam. There also ferry services from the hotel zone as well, but these are usually associated with day trips and are much more expensive than the normal services. Below you will find information on each service as well as schedule and price information. This is as accurate is we know it. If you find out about changes in schedule or pricing before we do, let us know.

If you have prearranged round trip transportation to/from the airport, be sure that you pay careful attention to which ferry dock they leave you and double check which dock they intend to pick you up from. I've known several people who didn't pay attention and ended up in the wrong place with their transport waiting in the other location!!

Gran Puerto is the newer of the docks for people ferries. If you need a last minute bit of Americana, they've got a McDonalds there waiting for you. Just be careful becaue the service is often not up to Ronald's standards and you may miss a boat waiting for your Big Mac.

Puerto Juarez is the old tried and true people ferry, also during the high season you may find the wait here shorter since UltraMar opened (Back in the day when we only had PJ, sometimes during high season the line would be so long your'd have to wait a boat or two before you could board. Not ideal if you have perishable items bought in Cancun). Punta Sam is further north where the car ferry arrives and departs from. If you take this route, there is a little restaurant there, but be sure to be an hour early for the boat as it often fills up and be prepared for very little excitement. The boats are slow and only operate a few times daily, so missing your boat can be a pain!

Magaña Express Service from Puerto Jaurez
The tried and true method for reaching Isla, the Magaña service has been a constrant and reliable means to get to Isla for as long as I can remember. Boats leave about every half hour from Puerto Juarez and take about 20 minutes to arrive on the Island. (A little bit faster if you get the bigger boat) you can buy your tickets at their desk or on board if you are running late. Each crossing costs 35 Pesos.

UltraMar Service from Gran Puerto

The newest ferry service to Isla Mujeres, Ultramar leaves from Gran Puerto, just two blocks before Puerto Juarez. Actually, that entire area is considered Puerto Juarez, but here we are referring to the actual dock. The catamarans they operate provide a comfortable ride with individual seats rather than benches. For this service you buy the tickets from the desk as you arrive and show your ticket before even boarding.

The time to Isla is about the same, possibly a little faster, but nothing major. The facilities at Gran Puerto are very comfotable with nice bathrooms, a coffee shop, internet, Oxxo (convience store) as well as a McDonalds and Subway. The price to cross is the same $35 Pesos. Here you can buy a round trip ticket, but it actually costs the same and you need to make sure you don't loos the second half of the stub. During your ride you'll either be treated to a short part of a movie or a DVD of comercials that advertise Isla Mujere and Cancun businesses.
